Summer is great for many reasons, but the extra sweat isn’t one of them. Besides being uncomfortable and inconvenient, sweating turns out to have some benefits. Sweating has benefits, experts say, whether it’s from heat, exercise, or nervousness.

The good things it does for our skin and body include:

  • Prevent us from overheating – The main reason we sweat is to regulate our body temperature. Dermatologist Dr Melanie Palm explains that sweat performs “the important function of effectively cooling our bodies.”
  • Detoxifies the body – Research shows that sweat glands help our skin rid itself of toxins, including alcohol, and this helps boost our immune system. A study found that fitness fanatics had lower levels of heavy metals like mercury and lead in their bodies, which could be from their sweating.
  • Promotes clear skin – Sweat also opens our pores and encourages them to shed oil and dirt. But when sweat dries on the skin, dirt, oil, and bacteria can get trapped and cause breakouts. It is therefore crucial to wash them to obtain clearer skin.
  • Aid in weight loss – Sweating can accelerate the loss of water weight in the body, but Dr. Robert A. Higgins, chair of research and athlete performance and safety at the University of Connecticut’s Korey Stringer Institute, says that’s only temporary. “It’s not fat mass,” he says, “which is the weight most people aim to lose.”
  • Reduces the risk of kidney stones – Sweat glands release water to the surface of the skin and less water in the body means you will need to go to the bathroom less often. This leaves less chance of materials that can cause kidney stones being found in the kidneys and urinary tract. Ideally, when we sweat more, we drink more water, which helps flush these minerals out of our system.
