Scrolling through FitTok will show you all kinds of workout gear, people doing basic exercises with a ab roller do cardio with ankle weights. Lately you might have seen people walking on a treadmill (the hashtag has racked up more than 138 million views on the platform), a contraption that looks like a less clunky version of a treadmill – hence the appeal.

If you’ve been curious about the fitness tool, know that a treadmill basically works like a treadmill, except it’s much simpler and smaller in design, says André Lenau, an ISSA certified personal trainer. While some come with handlebars, most are just a flat, moving tread that’s controlled with a remote so you can change the speed as you ride. “Most treadmill brands don’t have fancy touchscreens or bells and whistles, which makes them much more affordable,” Lenau told Bustle. To put it into perspective, a standard treadmill typically costs around $2,000, compared to treadmills that often cost $400 or lessdepending on model.

Of course, a big part of the appeal is the size and sleekness of treadmills, especially if you have limited space in your home gym. It’s easy to slide them under a couch or bed to spread them out of the way, and some even fold in half so you can store them in a corner or closet (!!). “They’re great for people who want to workout at home but have limited space,” says Lenau. And yet, they still do the job. Take a look at TikTok and you’ll see people using their treadmill at work, while they watch Netflix, and more. Here’s what to know about fitness equipment if you’re considering buying one for yourself.

The benefits of treadmills

Sure, treadmills are small, easy to store, and more affordable than treadmills, but another benefit is that they make it easier to move around rather than sitting still for long periods at a time, says Lenau. “With a compact design, they can be paired with a home office setup to keep you moving throughout your workday,” he says. Just slip it under your desk and walk around while you type, or pull it out when you’re about to watch a movie. Key too? Lenau points out that they’re much quieter than a tread, so you don’t have to worry about disturbing others if you feel like taking a late-night walk.

How fast are treadmills?

Due to their size, don’t expect to do sprint workouts on one of these pads. One of the main Differences between a treadmill and a treadmill is that the latter is only intended for walking, as the name suggests, says Whitney Berger, CPTcertified personal trainer and founder of WhitFitNYC. She doesn’t recommend running on them, even though they seem a bit fast. Most of them don’t go faster than four miles an hour.

“While they may be sturdy in construction, they’re usually not strong enough to withstand long periods of running or jogging,” adds Lenau. He notes that there are hybrid models designed for jogging, so you might be able to shop around and find one that’s more like a treadmill. “However, unless otherwise stated in the description of the treadmill, it is best to assume that it is not safe to run on it,” he says.

Are treadmills safe?

Many treadmills are just that – a mat. That means they don’t come with the usual treadmill handrails, and that can make them a bit harder to use. To stay stable and safe while walking, Lenau recommends looking straight ahead as you walk, as this will help you maintain your balance. “Most models will also automatically shut down if you stop taking steps or leave the device,” he adds.

What workouts can you do on a treadmill?

Whereas walking is good exercise On its own, there are a few things you can do to take your treadmill to the next level if that is your goal. Berger suggests adding slits as you walk to challenge your legs. “I also like incorporate resistance bands and ankle and arm weights while using the treadmill,” she says.

For extra whimsy, look for a hybrid treadmill that lifts on an incline so you can work your glutes and do some extra cardio while catching up on your favorite show.

How to choose a treadmill

Before choosing one, Berger recommends thinking about all the different features you might want. Look at specs like pad belt size, motor usage and horsepower, she says. As with treadmills, there are so many different models to choose from, so it really depends on your personal needs.
