Antonio Conte claimed it was “normal” to push players as much as he did with the Tottenham squad during pre-season, and claimed it would help prevent muscle injuries during the season.

The brutal nature of pre-season training under Conte and his coaching staff has been well documented, with the Italian having built a reputation for pushing players’ bodies to the limit with high intensity drills and a extreme fitness work (Football.London).

The Tottenham squad have experienced this over the past few weeks the players would have had to cover 42 lengths of pitch after two hours of training in 30C heat at the Seoul World Cup stadium earlier this month (Daily mail).

Some have questioned Conte’s methods, with Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens telling sky sports that a balance must be found to avoid injury.

However, the Tottenham head coach insisted that training muscle groups at high intensity during pre-season reduced the chances of picking up problems during the campaign.

When asked why his sessions were so intensive, Conte replied Football.London“Maybe for you it’s hard training, for me it’s normal training. I used to have these type of training sessions in the past when I was a player and when I was a coach.

“Maybe it was strange for you or for people who think players go on the pitch to have fun.

“Fun is a consequence of when you work very well and during pre-season it is important for us to reach peak fitness and start the season in the best possible way and also to avoid injuries.

“To avoid injuries, especially muscle injuries, you have to train your muscles intensively during training sessions. But I repeat for me it is very normal and it is the same in other countries.

Boosts web opinion

There is much disagreement regarding training intensity and volume, even at the highest level of different sports, with various athletes and coaches swearing by different methods.

Conte is obviously at the end of the spectrum, but the Italian’s methods cannot be objected to, given the success he has had in his career.
