Jack Wilshere admitted he was “surprised” by Arsenal’s fastest player in sprint training.
The 29-year-old is currently working with the Gunners squad in an effort to get back into shape in his search for first-team football elsewhere.
He has since provided insight into a number of aspects of Mikel Arteta’s diet, including helping to find out who the team’s fastest player is.
And, to his surprise, it wasn’t striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, known for his electric speed in the front line.
“We were doing a sprint test today,” Wilshere explained, in quotes reported by Football London .
“I asked the fitness guy ‘who’s the fastest player, is it Aubameyang’ and he said ‘no it’s Kieran Tierney’ – that surprised me.”
STAT Sports analysts confirmed on Twitter that Tierney’s top speed is currently 37.51 kilometers per hour.
The Scotsman is renowned for his tenacious approach, helping his national team to two wins in the international break.
Tierney has also played every minute of Arsenal’s last four Premier League games as he begins his third season at the Emirates.
The former Celtic left-back helped Arteta and co with three clean sheets in this run, only north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur breaking the Gunners backline since Manchester City did so five times in late August .
Tierney is seen as the future of Arsenal’s defense, as was Wilshere in the UAE midfielder ten years ago.
But injuries have taken a toll on the former starlet’s career, earning him a release from Bournemouth this summer.
Arteta recently welcomed academy graduate Wilshere exclusively telling Mirror Football how the Spaniard is around the club’s training ground at London Colney.
“He makes it clear to the players what he expects from them and I also think you are starting to see him on the pitch,” revealed the current free agent.
“They have a clear philosophy and a way of playing and I think that’s a credit to the manager.”
“He’s a very practical coach, he’s on the pitch, talks to people and shouts, draws people to where he wants them and really makes them understand,” Wilshere continued.
“You can see a clear philosophy that they want to play from behind and play the right way and I think they’re improving in that area.
“They have a young team there that is improving in this area and they will continue to improve over time.”
He added: “I think there is a lot more to come from them, but they are going in the right direction.”
