World Boxing Organization (WBO) No.8 contestant Jeo “Santino” Santisima is currently in intensive training in the United States for his clash against American Joet Gonzales on February 5 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, in California.

Santisima, 25, from Aroroy, Masbate, arrived in Los Angeles, Calif. On December 31, accompanied by her longtime trainer, Michael Domingo, who was also her mentor at the late ALA Boxing Gym.

They immediately got down to training at coach Freddie Roach’s famous Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles alongside world-class fighters.

According to Santisima, he trained with former teammate and WBO international featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo and former world champion Marlon Tapales at the Wild Card Gym.

“This is my second time training here at Wild Card. My first training here was for my fight with (Emanuel) Navarrete. I trained here for at least a week, ”Santisima said, as quoted by Cebu Daily News.

He said his training was more successful because he was able to train with International Boxing Federation (IBF) super fly champion Jerwin Ancajas and Armenian world title challenger Azat Hovhannisyan.

“We had a sparring with the champion Jerwin Ancajas. I’m still adjusting because I’ve just arrived, ”commented Santisima in the local dialect when he started his sparring sessions at Wild Card.

Santisima also had a few sparring sessions with four-division world champion Donnie Nietes in Cebu before leaving for the United States.

Santisima battled with Ancajas in a stiff preparation for a big fight against two-time world title challenger Joet Gonzalez, WBO’s No.5 contender.

“It was great. I’m still adjusting here, but our sparring was nice. He followed my opponent’s style and became a pressure fighter,” Santisima told SunStar Cebu.

“Their fight went really well, even though it was Jeo’s first fight here at the Wild Card. He did very well not to be outboxed even though he is still adjusting. He showed no sign of fatigue. We thank Jerwin for following Gonzalez’s style. I expect Jeo to show a better performance in his next sparring, ”added Santisima coach Michael Domingo.

Domingo revealed that Brendan Gibbons would hire a training partner who has a similar Orthodox fighting style with Gonzalez in the next training session.

“So far, we haven’t found a training partner for Jeo yet. Jerwin is a southpaw but he knows how to fight against the Orthodox, ”said Domingo. “While there won’t be any training partners available, coach Joven (Jimenez) has said Jerwin is ready to help.”

Ancajas has long been a regular intern with the Wild Card Boxing Club. He also fought with Jonas Sultan in his preparations for his big win over then undefeated Carlos Caraballo of Puerto Rico. Sultan was Santisima’s former teammate at the now closed ALA Gymnasium.

Ancajas is currently preparing for his 10th title defense against undefeated Argentine challenger Fernando Martinez also on February 5 in the United States.

Santisima is grateful for the high caliber sparring with a worldwide titlist like Ancajas. “His experience as a world champion is very different. It is a huge help,” he said.

After losing to Navarrete in his first fight in the United States, Santisima achieved successive stopping victories against Marjon Piencenaves Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte by KO2 and Allan Alberca from Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte by TKO1.

Santisima is 21-3 with 18 KOs, while Gonzalez is 24-2 with 14 KOs and a former WBO featherweight intercontinental champion.
