Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara returns to training after seven weeks out
Liverpool received a major boost with the return of Thiago Alcantara to full training ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Cardiff City at Anfield.
The Spanish midfielder has joined Jurgen Klopp’s squad after seven weeks out with a sprained hip capsule.
He hasn’t played since the Premier League win over Newcastle United at Anfield on December 16. Last month, Klopp denied rumors that the former Bayern Munich playmaker would be out for the rest of the season.
Thiago is desperate to make up for lost time and kick off what has been a frustrating campaign for him on a personal level so far. He has been limited to just eight Premier League starts due to a calf injury, a bout with COVID-19 and a sore hip problem.
His return to fitness comes at just the right time for manager Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool begin an eventful February with Sunday’s fourth-round draw against Cardiff. Premier League games against Leicester City and Burnley are then followed by a trip to the Champions League to face Inter at the San Siro. After visiting Norwich City, Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Liverpool are also preparing to welcome new £50million signing Luis Diaz to the club following his international commitments with Colombia and Harvey Elliott is set to return after five months out with a dislocated fracture. ankle.
Elliott scored and provided two assists in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wrexham at the AXA Training Center last Saturday and could feature against Cardiff.
