Mumbaikars and Hospital Staff Participate in Fun Fitness Activities | Bombay News

To motivate people across the country and celebrate the benefits of being active during the pandemic, staying fit, and inspiring individuals to take charge of their health, Mumbai Hospital recently celebrated National Fitness Day.
The hospital hosted fitness and hashtag challenges that included planks, squats, push-ups, lunges, jumping jacks, to encourage people to exercise, followed by a prize giving session. .
About 140 people participated in the various events, including uploading a 30-second exercise video and nominating others to exercise as well.
The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and fitness.
One of the participants, who is a frontline worker in a hospital, said: “Due to the fast pace of life, we often cannot focus on our fitness and we run into problems. This hospital-hosted event helped us focus on improving fitness and made us understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. I want to thank the hospital for this great idea. It was fun to compete with colleagues. I look forward to more meaningful initiatives. ”
Dr Imraan Khan, physiotherapist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said: “Currently, due to the pandemic, attention has shifted from noncommunicable diseases to communicable diseases which are infectious diseases or communicable diseases like Corona virus disease (COVID-19), influenza, hepatitis, influenza Vector and parasitic diseases, etc. While noncommunicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma) continue to be a huge burden all over the world. According to some studies, noncommunicable diseases contributed to around 60 to 70 percent of all deaths worldwide and 50 to 60 percent in India (before the pandemic). So far, we have clearly learned that NCDs and COVID-19 are closely linked. ”
Doctors say that physical activity is beneficial for improving general well-being. It is essential to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise reduces stress, depression, anxiety, makes you happier, increases bone mineral density, good for weight loss, joints, reduces risk of diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and heart problems, sharpens memory and improves mood by energizing you. Today, due to irregular schedules, majority of people fail to follow proper fitness regimen, suffer from various health problems and succumb to them. To help people understand the importance of fitness, the hospital has developed a unique Fitness Challenge initiative.
The causes of these noncommunicable diseases can be attributed to alcohol, smoking, poor eating habits and lack of physical activity. Thus, staying physically active and exercising reduces the burden of noncommunicable diseases.
Dr Khan added: “A brief session on the importance of fitness was given to hospital staff by the entire physiotherapy team who understood the components, myths and barriers to fitness. This idea is to give that initial boost to people to engage in the activity in a fun and healthy competitive way. Dr Vini (Anesthesiologist), Dr Tushayu (Emergency Medicine) and Sonal (Dietitian) were among the winners. If we can take a step towards physical activity and fitness. We can further reduce the mortality and morbidity caused during this pandemic and can also reduce the burden caused by these NCDs globally. So stay fit, stay strong, stay safe. ”
