National Gymnastics Day: History
Gymnastics originated in ancient Greece, where men trained in large halls called gymnasiums. Where gymnastics is derived from the Greek word gymnazein, which means “to exercise naked”. This concludes that physical fitness was highly valued in ancient Greece as the practice of gymnastics was practiced for both men and women.
Where the use of gymnastics became more formalized for warfare for men after the conquest of Greece by the Romans in 146 BC. The Athenians combined this more physical training with the education of the mind, and later resulted in the construction of physical training centers across Greece to facilitate availability for fitness.
Gymnastics quickly grew in popularity and people began to recognize its importance in physical training of the body, which resulted in the introduction of educational gymnastics in France by Spanish Colonel Don Francisco Amorós y Ondeano. In 1821, the German gymnastics movement was founded and led by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who is widely considered the “father of gymnastics” due to his role in popularizing the sport.
In Liège, Belgium, in 1881, the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) was created. Men’s gymnastics competitions gained enough ground in the late 19th century to be added to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
National Gymnastics Day: Meaning
National Gymnastics Day is crucial to promote gymnastics and inspire young people to practice this physically demanding sport. Due to the many physical activities involved in gymnastics, these skills – balance, coordination and flexibility – are all aided by it. Gymnastics training from an early age benefits the physical and mental development of children because learning, thinking, creativity and intelligence are not just brain functions but rather involve the whole body.
As obesity becomes a major health issue in the United States and is linked to a number of diseases, it is becoming increasingly important to promote sports like gymnastics. We can deduce from CDC statistics that the rate of obesity has steadily increased since the first survey in 1962, which found that (42.4%) of American adults are obese, that more than 2 out of 5 adults in the United States suffer from obesity (including severe obesity).
Thus, we can draw the conclusion that regular exercise is necessary to stay healthy and active. Gymnastics and many other sports can help achieve this goal. The celebration of the day also plays an important role in promoting the sport and pays tribute to the athletes, coaches and clubs who have kept the tradition of gymnastics alive and thriving for centuries.
