New Middleburg Heights recreation director outlines upcoming activities in 2022
MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — New Middleburg Heights recreation director Mark Elliott has taken the lead.
At the parks, recreation and services committee meeting on Feb. 22, he provided city officials with a slew of plans for the rest of 2022. Elliott noted that the recreation center’s more than 6,500 members will have many options to choose from, whether it is for fitness classes, aquatics, sports leagues or special activities and events.
Additionally, the two new pavilions in the park behind City Hall are available for rental to residents of Middleburg Heights for a nominal fee. Each contains a grill, electrical outlets and 10 picnic tables that can accommodate up to 60 people.
He pointed to some recent developments, including the establishment of “a fair and competitive pay scale for part-time employees,” as well as the possibility of Kidszone reopening.
“We fully intend to reopen it,” Elliott stressed. “It’s just a matter of when.”
Elliot said conversations have also been held with Grace Church to possibly establish time in the water area for homeschooled children during less-used daytime pool hours.
Adaptive sports will receive special attention, Elliott said. The Middleburg Heights Chamber of Commerce and the Middleburg Heights Women’s Club have both made significant monetary donations to help establish adaptive sports programs.
“We will do adaptive sports indoors and outdoors,” Elliott said. “We thank these two organizations, and we certainly appreciate it.”
He noted that the city has applied for — and hopes it will receive — a $15,000 grant from Cuyahoga County to help offset the costs of those programs as well.
Current plans are to open the outdoor pool on May 28.
As for special events, the list is long and varied. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny is scheduled for April 10 (online registrations accepted), Summer in the City will take place June 16-18, Wine Tasting and Piano Duel is scheduled for July 9 (an event fee with online registration) and a treasure hunt is scheduled for August 6.
Movies in the Park, with selections yet to be determined, will premiere June 11, July 23, and August 20.
Taste of Middleburg Heights, featuring local food, craft beer and tribute bands, will take place on August 13. FallFest is scheduled for September 30 and October 1.
A Sinatra and Friends concert, with food and wine available, will take place on October 22, followed by the town’s WinterFest and annual tree lighting on November 26.
