Pique Racing to fitness as pre-season activities begin
Jul.06 (THEWILL) – Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is still recovering from an injury he picked up at the end of the previous season, even at the start of pre-season.
An abductor injury forced the veteran centre-back to miss Barcelona’s last four La Liga games of the 2021/2022 season. However, he returned to their Catalonia training base earlier than expected to improve his conditioning for the upcoming season.
Pique is yet to join his teammates for group pre-season training as he is still not fully trained despite the tireless efforts of Barca’s medical staff and even after spending the majority of his time in the gym and on the treatment table. The Spaniard’s long-term status at the club is still up in the air but Barcelona coaches expect him to join the team the following week.
The 35-year-old has held in-depth conversations about his position in the squad with manager Xavi Hernandez as the Blaugrana are still looking for another centre-back. Pique has persisted in his belief that he has the skills to compete at the highest level, even telling club president Joan Laporta that he will sit down any new defenders they decide to bring in.
Nonetheless, Barca have given him cover in the form of Andres Christensen, partly because of his recurring injury problems, especially as Clement Lenglet is set to be loaned out to Tottenham.
