Stacey Solomon has opened up about her past financial struggles saying “the benefits saved her life”.
During Friday’s installment of Loose Women, Stacey, 33, joined Kaye Adams, Judi Love and Nadia Sawalha on the panel as they discussed the cost of living crisis and the £400 government grant to help pay energy bills.
“I just think it’s another example of how out of touch the government is,” Stacey, 32, said after Kaye brought up the subject.
However, Kaye, 59, shot back: “A lot of this Covid and then you have the situation in Ukraine. I hate to use the word unprecedented, but these are unprecedented times.”
The former X Factor star opened up about her own experiences leaning on the benefits after the birth of her first son, writes the Mirror.
“When I had Zachary at 17, 18, I got a Sure Start grant, it was called then, and I can’t tell you how much it saved my life,” she said.
“My work tax credits saved our lives, we couldn’t have lived without them. The milk tokens we used to get to help us buy SMA and milk and stuff in the stores that we couldn’t afford.
“It’s all been abolished. Like some of my friends who are in similar circumstances now don’t even have those opportunities, they’re completely taken away from people, and then they turn around and say, ‘oh look, we’re in a crisis cost of living, let’s deploy £400. It’s too little, too late,” she continued.
‘I don’t think they realize that for most people who need that £400 that money was spent six months ago,’ she added as Kaye admitted she would give her back £400 if she got it.
Loose Women viewers were quick to praise Stacey for her comments, with one person writing on Twitter, “Come on Stacey! #LooseWomen.”
Another person said: “Every time I catch @StaceySolomon on #LooseWomen she impresses me so much. So many people commenting on the news have only ever known massive wealth. Imo we need hear from many more like Stacey who has actually lived through more difficult financial times in her life.”
