The Ukrainian army conducts a military exercise in Chernobyl –

Ukrainian army began exercises to conduct hostilities in populated areas. The exercises are conducted in the area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and the goal of Ukraine army is to prepare for a possible Russian invasion, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky said it was the first such large-scale military exercise in the restricted area. A video released by the Interior Ministry shows mortar training in the city of Pripyat, uninhabited since 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident.

Training also included casualty rescue and mine clearance.

Russia deployed more than 100,000 troops along its border with Ukraine. This has raised fears that the Kremlin is planning an invasion, but Moscow denies such intentions.

According to Ukraine, one of the possible scenarios is a Russian attack from the north through the territory of Belarus. If this happens, the Ukrainian army will have to prepare for combat in the Chernobyl zone affected by radiation. The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, is less than 70 km from the restricted area around Pripyat and just over 80 km from the Belarusian border.
