Watchet training exercise: Photos show ‘major’ response
A ‘major incident drill’ involving Avon and Somerset Police, fire and paramedics took place at Watchet yesterday (Monday May 23).
The pre-planned exercise, co-ordinated by Somerset West and Taunton Council, involved “an incident on board a chartered fishing boat near the entrance to Watchet Harbor Marina”.
The council reminded people ahead of time that while this might seem “dramatic”, it was not a cause for concern. As well as standard blue light emergency services, the exercise also involved the council, Watchet Harbor Master and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

As part of the exercise, casualties were recovered from the ship and a rest center was set up in the town. The photos show the coordinated response of all the emergency services present.
They seem to have practiced pulling an injured person out of the water and bringing him to shore. Police special constables, who participated in the training, posted on Twitter suggesting the exercise included the scenario of people being poisoned by methane.
