Mushroom extracts and supplements generally process and concentrate mushroom ingredients. “If you look at what was used [medicinally] years ago it didn’t come in a jar. It was straight out of the ground,” says Taub-Dix.
It’s unclear what types of mushroom extract supplements you might want to take, what the dosage should be, or how long you should take them. “We don’t really know how much you need. The research isn’t clear, so it’s a good idea to check with your healthcare provider or dietitian,” says Taub-Dix.
And, as with any supplement, you have to be careful with the interactions. “There’s always potential for a supplement to interact with a medication you’re taking or a condition you have,” Cassetty says. She doesn’t recommend extracts containing adaptogens for people with autoimmune conditions, for example, because they could boost your immune system. For example, one type of mushroom, called reishi, may interact with drugs for diabetes, high blood pressure and blood clotting, according to MedlinePlus.
Chaga extract can also trigger interactions. It can improve your blood circulation, which can be dangerous if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder. Although further research is needed, a report in the ASCO Post in July 2019 noted that chaga extract may enhance the effects of anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications.
“I tell people who take supplements, if you’re on medication or have a chronic condition, see your doctor,” Cassetty says.
